While the tranny is out, it would probably be wise to go through the tranny with a good rebuild. I priced a converter and parts to rebuild for the '99 at about $600. That is barring any unexpected bad parts and doing the labor myself.

I spent a few years working at an independent shop who had a fleet of tow trucks. All of where fords with the 7.3. We put allot of injector pumps, but other than that they were very stout. Convert it too run on vegtable oil for around a grand. Would be worth it to me.

One suggestion 4X4. It may cost a dollar more but it will hold it value better. Plus the first time you get a your 8000+ truck stuck you will wish you had it. If I were to do it all over I would go with the 2002 powerstroke.. Ford changed the suspensions between 01 and 02. Much better ride.

Hey gas grill not wanting to offend however do have to correct you on some your info.

1987 the 6.9l engine is punched out to make the navistar international 7.3l indirect injection engine. Has all mechanical systems solid reliable engine rated 185 hp 385ft-lbs think that torque is right could be wrong.

1994 first turbo 7.3liter idi mechanical turbo 190hp 395 ft-lbs one year only.

1995 first powerstroke electronic control with huei hydraulic unit electronic injection (uses engine oil for firing of injectors) full electronic control 215hp 425 ft-lbs of torque carrys on to 98'

98 gained the aftercooler thanks to the superdutys new grill 99' gained the larger class 7 truck intakes on the heads power hits 235 500. This was pretty much the way 7.3's finished up with minor software, and electronic changes. best by far is a 03' (manufactured first part of year with 7.3l the september saw the birth of the 6.0l generation. The 03' was thie finest of the 7.3l it had almost 10 years of r@d at that moment. Stray away fromt eh 95's had similar trouble to the first 6.0l 96's good, and up. The 94's are hard to find but solid, and all the IDI mechanical 7.3liters are solid solid engines. All 7.3liters in any trim will make 350,000 miles if kept track.

Common problems: IDI engines transfer pump, and the high pressure pump ring cracking above 250,000.

Powerstroke: Cam sensor (carry one in the glovebox, and save yourself a tow bill) If it sputters and picks up again change it. It will just quit and you'll be stuck there.

Fuel filter bowl drain valve: Leaks if using ultra low sulfer fuel withthe old style orings ford has updated part.

95-97 has mechanical transfer pump that fails as any mechanical pump.

Any powerstroke leak ta high pressure oil pump running down the valley of the engine, and out the back over the bell housing causing a looks like real main seal condition.

Thats my .02

Gas grill those are some stout numbers for your rig. Like to see it!!
