How to have a successful trail ride

i think its best if ppl invest in good working cb radios...nothing worse than part of the group leaving other behind and cant reach someone. that being said...one SHOULD NEVER LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND, ALWAYS KEEP THEM IN THE REARVIEW.

CB radios are great for the trails but staying together is a 2-way road. Some folks like to be the rabbit while others the hare.
I am all for staying together, but folks have to agree on a reasonable speed. I understand if there are obstacles along the way, but that is not what I'm talking about here.
I can assure you, if I am ahead of you and you CHOOSE to go so slow, moss begins to grow on your hood, I am leaving your a$$ behind.

Personally, I am a HUGE fan of small groups (5) of similarly suited vehicles riding together.

i watched my speed this weekend...10mph is more than enough, however...few in the middle kept slowing those of us behind.

another thing Clay pointed out...was having the winch remote within arms reach!:toothy12: seriously though...that event could have gone real bad on "elevator shaft" or could have been fixed in minutes. I do keep all my things in the storage box, but before i start wheeling, the remote and air down tool go right in center console.

i have been in groups of 30+ rigs...yes it can take a while, but communication is key. we should be able to move along with the 10+ rigs or so we have. also, seeing that everyone actually airs down can help out too.

Also make sure everyone locks in their hubs before we take off would help, lol. I like the idea of smaller groups, if we can have groups divided up at the begining based on what people like and what they can handle, possibly set a rough time and place to meat as a group for lunch in case people wanna change groups mid day.

good thought, the seasoned guys...really should check with any new folks, making sure they know to be in low range, hubs locked, and if they have an automatic-be in 1st gear. ive seen a lot of ppl not know that and could cause tranny problems, also the airing down. as a rule...stock wheels-to after market(non beadlock) should always stay in the 15psi range. i recommend 8" wheels when looking to buy, they hold the bead better when airing down. also actually taking the bronco out and using the 4wd a few times before an event will help you in a couple ways...you can hear if a ujoint is starting to go bad(squeaking, chirping sound), it helkps sling gear oil to all the bearings, and using the hubs will let you know if they are working properly.

I am a rookie and do not know much about trail rides, but from observing people in general it seems there will always be differences in how they will want to do things
no matter what the activity. So it would seem that people with similar likes should somehow be grouped together. We all know I had some trouble on the trails Friday and Saturday. When we were at the rock bowl and Just before I roll started I was sick to get back to camp and out of the line so I would not hold the group up without getting stuck on the trail alone. As soon as a option to go down the hill and back to camp presented itself I immediately took it. Thanks Perry for escorting me down. Saturday when I first noticed the same problem was still there I asked and got a quick 5 minute jump charge from Bart and returned to camp where I finally solved the problem, not holding the group I was with up any longer than necessary. Thanks Bart and all who assisted me. At this stage in the game I feel I may need to be with the less capable or slower moving group with hopes that some day I will be able to keep up with and learn from the more experienced off roaders. Some day I would love to be able to get on the rocks climbing like some of you did in the bowl. Give me a year and I will not have the best rig in the crowd but I will progress greatly from where I am at now. I do have enthusiasm and drive to get there. I learned so much this past weekend. I wanna be a big dog too. Do you guys have a trail master kinda like we do with a Hunt Master who takes charge and directs people on where to be and what is expected of them during the Hunt or on the trails? My observations of something like this would have seen Chuzie and Chuck on Friday and Bart on Saturday in this roll..

i wouldnt say we had a hunt master or the like...but we always have a trail leader and a tail gunner. this past weekend was a one off deal...only one person had actually been there before. so none of us had any ideas of the trail conditions. this is not the case for a place like URE. Nick,Bart,Clay would be the most knowledgeable. we have come to love that place, and we usually break off into 2 groups...hardcore guys, less capable rigs...we know were the bone stock rigs, the 32" open guys can go, and the ones with a posi and lil bigger than stock tires can go. we used to have many bone stock rigs with us, and we would show them just what their rig can actually do...very capable!it sucks breaking down, or having issues...you made a stand up decision to leave and address the alternator. im sure no one carries a spare lol...except for chuzie:hysterical:

Why would i carry a spare alt when i can just steal the one from your motor?

I do carry new brushes though. ;-)
