Are you planning on rebuilding or just freshening up the 351?

I'm just planning to freshen it up at this point. What intake and carb are you running? Did you have a breakerless ignition?

Edelbrock Performer RPM clone by ProComp for the intake and a Demon 650 vacuum secondary. I run a HEI conversion distributor. If you don't have at least 2" of body lift you may have clearance trouble with the distributor and the hood.

Loving the progress. That is how most builds start, something small turns into a major build. Always remember to match your cam to what ever intake you go with.
Decide what you put into your motor on what you plan to do with your rig. I know you have been hesitant to take your ride off road since the body is so clean. That is true for the tranny too. I would only switch to a 435 if I wanted to crawl more or had such large tires that I needed it to get going. If your tranny works with the size tire you have and for the type of wheeling you want too do. Then save the money and time for engine upgrades. Some cheap upgrades you can do are the later model stock distributer with an mallery ignition box. Or pertronix and an aftermarket ignition box.

I pulled the heads off last night and was able to get the block off of the floor tonight thanks to JayT's engine stand!



I plan to take the heads to the machine shop so they can assess the condition. I assume a valve job will be needed.



Here's a picture of the pressure plate and the worn release levers. No wonder it was squeaking up a storm. The release bearing is completely seized up.

73Bronc, I installed a Pertronix ignition in my 74's 302 last summer. One of the best and easiest mods I have ever done. Don't know why I fooled with points all these years.... cratchhe: :banghead: cratchhe: :banghead:

pertronix is tha bomb. and toss the points in the dash for a back-up. But I believe it to be one of the best 70$ you can spend.

Help me out here fellas. Would the Pertronix system work in conjunction with the HEI conversion distributor?

pertronix replaces the points type ignition. not needed with the HEI style.
