I'm fixin to buy parts for the engine. I need to fix an oil leak that I suspect is coming from the front main seal. I figured while I'm at it I may as well replace soon old components that I know haven't been changed since I've owned the truck (15years). I have been looking at the timing gear drive sets and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these. I'm aware of the cost differences. Gear drive sets range from $100-$200 and the chain set ups go from $37-$100. ( or more for double chain set ups).
I'm also going to replace the water pump, harmonic balancer, and fuel pump. Thanks y'all

I'm not a big fan of noisy gear drives. A good double roller will give good service and probably outlast most of the other engine components. The gear drives are old school '60's technology. If you need precise low drag cam timing, a belt drive is your best bet.

I know that the gear drive is old school technology. I kinda dig that gear whine noise that it makes. They do make a quiet version but it is just quieter, not silent. I was shopping Summit and found some fairly cheap double rollers, that look very enticing. WHOA!:rubeyes: the Jesel belt drive systems are way out of my budget $1100.
I am leaning towards the double roller just becuase of the cheaper price, but like I said the gear drive just sounds cool IMO.
And I didn't forget about the thermostat, it was replaced last summer.:xyxthumbs: Thanks for the input y'all.:xyxthumbs:

I had a Stupid Pete Jackson Gear drive in my Half Cab I use to own. I am going to replace my timming chain in my Bronco this week and plan on going with a double roller. Nothing to fancy. Good luck

A double roller will fit under the factory cover. As for brand, just about any name brand will do. I have used Melling and Cloyes many times with out any complaints.
Some kits will come with a multi-position crank gear. Straight up or 0* is always safe and reliable. Advancing will move the power lower in the rpm and retarding will raise the rpm. Not necessarily make more or less power, just when the power band begins and ends.
