351W Exhaust Upgrade
#1
I'm looking to replace my stock exhaust in the next few months. Has anyone installed headers on a 351W setup with manual tranny? It's pretty tight in terms of space and I'm wondering which headers would fit. I seem to recall reading about mustang shorty headers as a potential fit but I'm hoping someone can verify and offer advice on the best setup. Any suggestions on pipe size and mufflers is also appreciated. Thanks in advance ... -Trey

Hey Trey.....don't know much, yet, about things but I'll check with my husband as far as exhaust tie in and get back with 'ya but we're getting ready to install some mustang shorty headers on my 302......everyone has told us that they should work fine....I have a '73 EB....how close are you to getting started?

catch up with 'ya later....

My brother had a '77 he got from another member here...it had a 351W, a 4-spd,and long tube headers(I think headman) I can check. I just bought some stainless from Wild Horses(shorties)Chuck

I run Hedman Hedders on my 351W. They are close to the fender wells and the frame rail. I like the ball flange collectors, no gaskets to worry with.

I have some nice long tube headers and a completely new ball/flange kit. I removed them for the shorties. I was gonna sandblast, and repaint with POR20 after installing the ball/flanges then sell them. They were on my 302-they worked with the C4 I had and the (now)np 435.Chuck

For a 73, Hedman's site only lists part numbers for a 302. Did you just go with one of the hedders associated with the 82-96 351W?

I'm sure wild horses sell the headers for 351/broncos

Mine are the Elite 89418. They are for the 302. The 351 is just a little taller and wider that is why my headers are close to the frame rail.

I spoke to Johnny at Wild Horses and they do have a set for the 351W that will work with "slight" modifications  since the heads are a little taller on the 351W. He said that someone in the shop there has a set of long tubes installed on a 351W setup. He said the install may require grinding the flange or shifting the transfer case mount slightly.
