I WISH I could find a 7.3L Excursion for a decent price. Those are getting harder and harder to find. I have always wanted one and my wife does too! JayT should chime in here.. he had a 7.3L and then the 6.0 Excursion.
I do love my 7.3L F350 though.

i have found 4 so far in the 12500 to 15000 range, and each has mileage between 170000 adn 200000. This is for 4x4, 7.3's...
Found even more with over 200K for a little less, but i dont know much about deisels, and would be concerned with reliability with miles that high...
Is that a valid concern, or is 200-250K still reasonable on this motor?
I dont mind putting some money in here and there to fix accessories and junk, but i dont wanna run into major mechanical issues for at least 50K miles or so...
im looking for all the advice and .02's i can get here...

I would look for under 200K, even on the 7.3L. I know guys with 300+ on them but it all depends on who drove it before now. My '99 has 116K on it now and the reason I jumped on it was because it was a great deal with low miles. Not really the truck I wanted, but the motor with low miles! I drive it daily and get 18-19 mpg's, bone stock, but 2wd. I do want to put a program in it to change my shift points. I had a '02 F250 with a mild program and it drove much better than my current stock 7.3L that currently drives like a school bus.

my buddy scott bought a 97 or 99 f250(got it from a glass company
it showed 384,000 when he got. so last month it was going to turn 400k...except when all the zeros rolled over....THE 3 REMAINED! so the new question was..."how many times could that have happened?"
no matter what you get...try to get one with a good maintenance record. those(all with most diesels) can go beyond your imagination. but it all comes down to preventive maintenance. look for firm crisp shifts in the trannys and look very hard for any wetness of fuel on the top and back of the 7.3. they have O ring and fuel lines that go back all the time.

the o rings in the petcock for the fuel filter on top of engine seem to go bad in the 7.3s. not an expensive fix if you do it yourself. the low sulfer diesel is most of the culprit. i always run lucas or diesel kleen every other fill up.
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a welder then your gonna need a new one!

I've ridden in the newer 6.0 excursion. Granted it is the 6.0 and not the 7.3, but you might find a better deal on the 6.0. I'd look for one with the EGR delete and headwork done already. My main reason for saying that is that the 7.3's are LOUD. If it is something the your or your wife is going to drive everyday, the 7.3's can be a little unruly on a longer trip. Otherwise they are great motors, as long as they are maintained. The biggest drawbacks to the vehicles really aren't the engine as much as the trans, unit bearing hubs, vacuum lockouts, and the interior which falls apart.

Ditto on the 7.3L being LOUD!!! You will find yourself turning the radio up louder and louder to drown it out. I am very jealous of the new diesels that are quiet like my wife's VW TDI.
