306 EFI build
#1
hey guys...i got a few things that might come my way soon. my motor is bone stock '91 5.0 HO(maybe 19-20K miles). a friend is offering his B303 cam, so he can upgrade.

i bought a nice GT40 intake already drilled/tapped.

also have a friend willing to swap trick-flow upper/lower w/ eld. 70MM TB

for my mustang or GT40 intake(due to hood clearance without body lift).

all im really looking for is a some lopy idle, a lil chop...better sounds i would like to find some GT40 heads...but havent yet. so with all that being said, should i drop this cam in and run what i got or consider the trick-flow stuff(and would it run good with 19lb inj or would i need 24lb to make it run right? this is my daily driver, so please keep that in mind. right now...im thinking just cam swap. lemme know motor guys, i appreciate the help and advice

LKQ had a V8 Explorer about a month ago, could still be there, it has the Iron GT40 heads. Confusedhrug:

I wonder who that friend with the Trick flow stuff is...

I'd trade him in a minute for that GT40 stuff. I'm assuming you have an Explorer intake.

....looks like some of the same thoughts I had on Classic of the cam moving the torque curve too far up for wheelin'.......good for mud boggin'!!!!

I'm considering keeping the Trick Flow intake and running a 2" body lift, but I'm still not sure it would clear my stock hood. The 2" BL would also give some extra room in hopes of installing a X pipe exhaust system.

Sorry Chuck for being a little fickle, but you are definitely first in line for the trade.:xyxthumbs:

Both the B303 and the E303 have a little chop to their idle. It's more pronounced with more compression and a good 10-15* base time. Even with 1.7 rockers most head combos can be cut to raise compression and still maintain safe piston to valve clearance. E7 castings can be modified to make good street heads too, but it is probably still cheaper to go after market.

If your planning on just swapping the cam for the time being, you'd better upgrade the valve springs too.

i was told i could run the stock springs with this cam and i didnt need to upgrade to 1.6 rockers. is this not true Aaron?

Sounds more like a recommendation rather than a necessity.

The specs list are for using 1.6 rockers. The 1.7 give about .030" more lift at the valve on the E cam.

I would swap the springs. Your adding a lot more duration and lift making the ramp rates increase, which increase the load on the springs. You may not have any noticeable effects, but most likely you will get some valve float on the top end. Another possible scenario is the valves may star to bounce at higher rpms. This could cause push rod failure and premature valve seat wear.
