ring and pinion question
#1
Hello board,

I'm lifting my '90 full size 302 4x4 bronco and setting it on 35" tires. Everything I've read says I will be much happier with 4.56 gears so I've been looking around for parts. Since my knowledge of regearing is very limited, I thought I would seek the board's advice on what I will need to purchase.

Three questions specifically:
1) Will I need to swap out the front and rear ring and pinions?
2) Is this what I will need to do the swap? (see below, pasted item descriptions in from partstrain.com)
3) If I will need the below two items, what else (if anything) will I need to purchase for the gear swap?

Item#1
Motive Gear Ring And Pinion Set
1978-1996 Ford Bronco
"MOTIVE GEAR RING AND PINION SET, FRONT -- Ring And Pinion, 4.56 Ratio, Reverse Cut Pinion, Without Master Kit, Front Dana 44, Made With The Highest Quality Materials, Completely CNC Machined, Heat Treated, Teeth Are Index Spaced, Lapped And Have A Central Contact Pattern For Maximum Strength And Craftsmanship, Direct Fit Replacement Part"

Item#2
Motive Gear Ring And Pinion Set
1986-1996 Ford Bronco
"MOTIVE GEAR RING AND PINION SET, MOTIVATOR, REAR -- Motivator, Ring And Pinion, 4.56 Ratio, Rear, Rear 8.8, Reduces Rotating Weight By Up To 2 Pounds, Computer Controlled Heat Treatment And A Solid Shank Pinion Shaft, Completely CNC Machined, Heat Treated, Teeth Are Index Spaced, Lapped And Have A Central Contact Pattern For Maximum Strength"

Thanks everyone,
Clint

I had a 89 with 33s on it with a 302, no problems pulling, I would slap those 35s on it and check it out before I mess with the gears. You maybe ok with what you got??

1. Yes, you do need to do both the front and rear before you engage the transfer case. You can change the front or rear only, but you'll need to change the other before you can use your 4wd.

2 & 3. Yes, but in addition to those you will also need part numbers M92F88IK & M92F88IK. Those are your instillation kits for the front & rear differentials. You will need a new carrier for your D44. There is a carrier break at 3.73:1 and you'll need a 3.93 and up carrier for your new gears. I can't find this part on partstrain.com.

On 2nd thought, I've had good service from Randy's Ring & Pinion. Unless you have a special attachment to PartsTrain.com, I'd recommend you call Randy's and they'll gladly sell you everything you need :hysterical:

That's everything I was trying to find on the other website. I'm sure i'm overlooking something majorly important, tho Confusedcratchhe:

I will second what Ogeechee4x4e said, especialy randy's, great guys to deal with and they can tell you every thing you will need.
You might think about keeping the carriers and gears you have and go with a lower t-case, may be cheaper overall.
Just a thought,

Cheaper doesn't mean better. If your bronco sees the road on a regular basis, you're going to want to regear if you've got 35's. I'm speaking from first hand experience, 35's and stock 3.55 gears with a 302 flat out sucks.

Are you planning to have a shop do the install?

Actually, I'm still looking for someone that could regear for me.

Know of anyone that may be able to help?

Thanks, Clint

The only trouble I had with my 90BB (3.55s with 35s) was that it would not stay in OD... It was a little gustless, but... still roadworthy. Get the 35s on, drive it, save some cash up... then do it right (all)... I went to 4.88s and wish I had gone one more step. Don't get me wrong, the 4.88s are great, and it's a torque monster... I just wish it had a little more (I know, JP, story of my life - right?!)

If you were near Durham, NC, I'd highly recommend Chase (http://www.eastcoastgearsupply.com).) for the install...

do you know what gear your running now?? What size tires are you currently running?? To get back to turning factory rpms at at cruise speed you would need 4.56's if you are a standard 3.54 gear, but I would see what my stock gear is first and go from there. Bronco graveyard has a good chart to help with gear ratio's if you need to see first hand. And x2 on getting someone to install these for you. Not bad once you've done it a couple of times, but the first time or two is ROUGH!!!
