90 Bronco Timing Belt question

Hello Board,

My question is two part.

1) My 90 Bronco has 200K miles on it and I don't believe the timing belt has ever been replaced. Is this something I should have done asap? What is the reputation for timing belt longevity on a 90 Bronco?

2) What else, mechanically, should I look out for at the 200K mark? (tranny oil, coolant, etc.)

Since, no real , mach. has chimed in. Here is my .02. There is no fountain of youth for 200k, run that bad boy till it stops. The cost of a new belt is 1/2 if not more than a used motor. Unless you do it yourself. If it were my truck just as soon as I replaced a Tbelt a rod would come slamn though the pan. Normal fluid and filter change for both motor and trany. n cross your fingers.

The deal with the timing chain is that you never know when it is going to go. If it goes and you are out wheeling/ high rev you could damage your valves and pistons. CRUNCH!!! A timing set will run you about $30.00. It is super easy to install once you get to it and even that is not that tough if you have a day to do it. Plus you learn a lot about the front end of your rig.

My advice, replace the timing set and check the plugs +wires, replace the diff fluid and tranny fluid and transfer case fluid, repack the hubs and grease all the serviceable fittings, new coolant and brake fluid pretty much anything liquid on the rig, if it is old, should be replace or serviced.

$30.00 timing set and a day of work or a couple hundred bucks in heads and valve job + labor. That is an easy one.

It won't hurt to replace the timing chain, but at 200K, I'd start saving my pennies for a long block to replace it with.

And if you haven't already done so, change the tranny fluid and put a tranny cooler on it. You want that bad boy to last as long as possible.

Our V8's don't use a timing belt, they're for OHV engines.. our engines use a timing CHAIN set, and it doesn't require replacement at 60,000 miles like those rice burner imports.. but at 200k you really need to start looking for a replacement engine.. either used at the boneyard or Craig's List etc.. or you can get a rebuilt longblock at NAPA, the Zone etc with a warranty.
