Precision Gear vs Yukon?
#1
Keep in mind that this is for my mild mannered 66 build... (Streetable, but always ready to jump off the road)

Precision R&P are nearly half the cost of Yukon's... Normally, I'm a "you get what you pay for" kinda guy, but are the Yukons really worth it, considering they're going in the D30? I assume that no matter what I put in there, they're going to break and give me the "excuse" to jump up to D44 (at least)...

Thoughts?

On second thought, anyone selling a D44 locked "cheap"? lol.

Are you driving on the front axle all the time or occasionally? How much time is it actually going to be engaged? I would worry less about the front end name brand stuff, especially in a D30. It that worries you, the 44 route may be a better investment.

Thanks fellas... I'll probably be going the "cheaper" route, considering the use I'll get out of the D30... Were 4.10s really stock in 66? Seems pretty big to me, but I definitely took out a Ring gear with 41 teeth and a 10 tooth pinion... Of course, everything else the PO did has screwed me, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was completely wrong. I may pull the rear apart to verify before ordering.

School me on the 3speed, almighty gurus... is 3rd 1:1? If so, at 65mph and 31s, I'd be spinning the crank at at about 2900... right? And what about when I put the C4 in?

Yikes! Feel like you're building this with/for me?! Sorry for the noob questions.

SOME of the gear sets were 4.10/4.11. The 170 6 and some of the 200 6 had those. I don't know of any 289/302 that came stock that way. The reason it broke may be because of a mismatch between front and rear. I had a set like that once. Do check the rear before assuming the rear is 4.10. There can be mismatch front to rear but not in the 3.73-4.11 range. That is too much. 4.10-4.09 F-R is ok and accepted as equal. No pavement is the only stopper there. Dirt will give up that difference.

I have had a lot of luck with Yukon's. For a Dana 30, I would get what ever is cheaper though.

I ended up getting USA Standard, from JBG, because they didnt' have Precision's in 4.10s... I started putting them in today... and very quickly understood why shops charge over 500 bucks to install gears! I wish the Chuck and Moody show was closer, because I'd gladly pay 200 bucks to have these gears done today!

This is my first gear install (big surprise), so I'm learning as I go. I found (what I think is) a damn good writeup on pirate... and trying my best to follow it. I didn't have all the tools (dial indicator & mic) to begin with... I also found that setup bearings are a MUST! Thankfully, my old ones were salvageable for this use. I'm lacking an outer pinion setup bearing, so the install will continue this week... Here's hoping...
