Sunday I took out the heater box and got it apart.
My plan was to put a new blower motor in it, replace all
the seals, clean it up good and be done ... but it never works out that way.
First my new blower motor looks nothing like the original. For something as
visible as the blower motor, the new motor is unacceptable. So now I am
looking for a new one that looks like the original or I may have the original rebuilt. We'll see.
I am also fighting the blower wheel. Damn thing does not
want to come off and I can't risk destroying the motor.
Next the flapper plates for the defrost and heat are a bit rusty. To get them
out I am going to have to cut some rivets to get the heater box apart.
It has the rivets that expand and peel back (see pictures).
I'm now looking for replacement rivets that look the same and I'm not
having any luck. If anyone knows where to find these let me know.
Worst case I'll use split rivets to get it back together but I hate to compromise.
Looks like I may replace the heater core while I'm in here. The inlet and
outlet pipes are a bit bent up from getting the hoses on and off. (Not my doing!)
There are a few metal pieces that need prep and paint so I can work on that
while I sort through the other issues. I'm not going to paint the plastic box.
No paint from the factory ... no paint now. I'm thinking a little armor all might
clean it up and make it look good.

Yep ... there is a set screw that holds the fan on. Apparently mine has some rust helping
out as well. I hit it with PB blaster and I'll try again. I got the rivets out tonight without
too much damage. Now I can start cleaning and painting.

Sheesh! You would think that my first issue would have been with the speedo
cluster or the vacuum wiper motors. Nope those went smooth as silk. No problemo.
It's the blower motor for crying out loud. That F*$!#* squirrel cage will not come off.
I have soaked it down with PB blaster, beat it with a BFH, heated with a torch,
cussed at it, flipped it off ... all to no avail. :banghead:
I took it to a local shop that rebuilds alternators and starters today and the
mechanic said he has tried to take those apart in the past and the motor case
is sealed when they are made so no rebuilding possible. Great.
So I looked up the ford part number, called my favorite NOS parts guy and I
have a new old stock coming with a new cage. Damn lucky to find one!
FYI ... when you buy a NOS part it's replacement part cost X2 at least.
So anyway I have a brand new Toms replacement blower motor for sale that
does not look like the stock one but is perfectly functional for folks that are not
as wierd about this stuff as me. I also have a slightly beat up stock one to use for target practice if anyone needs it.

OK ... a little progress
The heater box is back together and installed.
I put a new heater core in, new old stock blower motor, cage and a seal kit.
All the metal pieces got stripped to bare metal, primed, painted and ready to
go another 43 years. So that little task is complete. Pics below.
Next up ... is sand blasting and preping all the Bronco grey pieces for new paint.
Then I build up new seats ... stay tuned!
