should I try the test on 4 and 8 again tomorrow to see if there is a different number maybe put a spark plug back in 3 and 7 while trying those again?

At this point what hopes, so hoe bad is this, your last response killed my hopes but I guess that was the readdings that did that. So just be brutally honest on how bad this looks.

I wouldn't run it. Those numbers are pitiful. You will be losing a ton of power blowing by the rings and it will only get exponentially worse with time. Suck it up and rebuild the motor. At a minimum, you should be able to get by with honing and rings. Bearings and valves are a good idea though costs allowing.

This is where Chuz tells ya to go to junkyard and pull a 351w and throw it in. Practically an exact fit if you carb it.

I'm thinking that ain't so bad and might get better after it runs a bit. Worth a try! Chuzie, read post #19 again and pay attention to the last line. Save the engine rebuild for the frame off. I've seen 302s with low compression that ran smooth as silk and served there purpose at getting a vehicle around until the rest of the vehicle got closer to warranting an engine rebuild. One had the snot ran out of it wheeling and muddin'...by the time the motor came out for a rebuild while the body was getting a good make over we found every skirt from every piston laying in the pan!! It still ran ok.

Well as a good backup plan I am gonna go through the other 302 I have sitting here and pull it down and check everything, the heads look clean like brand new fresh rebuild clean, but I don't know how clean everything else is so gonna have a friend come over this saturday that is a mechanic and help me pull it down and check everything.

So where has everyone found to get the best good quality 302 gaskets at for the best price?

Well ended up going with the Jegs kit through amazon as it had free shipping although it is 3 to 5 days so might be here for the weekend might not. This will allow me to go thorugh the other 302 I have and see if there are any problems if there are not it will be back together and hopefully up and running. The Jegs gaskit kit was 60 dollars and free shipping so not too bad. Would have went with the other kit from engine kits.com but they wanted like 30 for shipping and that is 22 I can put towards other parts then, I know chincy but every dollar counts when your building theese broncos right?

Well I got the other engine checked out and it looks good doesn't look like it has even been broken in yet so a good fall back option if the current engine in the 68 doesn't look good after a few miles on her.

Went to put plug wires on and the first set I had laying around didn't think about till I got under the hood but was for an ignition with electronic distributor, so pulled out the box of accell wires that are cut to length type, only to find out I needed a special set of plug wire crimpers so i ordered them as it was about the same to order them or buy a new set of wires but where not as thick as the current set. Well the crimpers arrived yesterday and got all the plug wires on and crimped with ends to the proper length and such.

Today I pulled the drain cock on the radiator as it wouldn't spin open so have to replace that, well while I had it out I decided to run the water hose down the radiator for a few minutes to flush any old liquid that might of been in there out. But the good news is the hoses still look good, although one of the clamps seems to need replacing a really old style clamp but it might be the hose too.

The next step will be blowing out the carb maybe even swapping it out and hoooking the coil up and seeing if it runs after those other small things are fixed.
