460 question etc

Im considering buying a small motorhome. prolly a class c. alot that I have looked at have the ford 460. is this a good powerplant? mostly looking at mid to late 80's vehicles. what year did they switch to fuel inj? also i notice some diff trannys that mate with this eng. a c5 is what i hink i saw most. school me on ford trannys a little. i will be towing a 8x10 enclosed trailer with a couple bikes or flat towing a small vehicle. any opinions?

The 460 is a gas hog in a big way. I would go with the 351 if you can find one. I ran into a deal on a motor home the other day class c that needed some interior work. It had a 460 so I did not touch it.

you'll spend the difference in repairs on over using the gas engine-- wait for the diesel 7.3 if you can find one!!

351 won't have the power you need. My 460 got about 10mpg. Even the 460 will dissapoint you in the mountains. I'd wait for a diesel. It should have a C6 trans which is bulletproof.

x2 (I am Powerstroke fan).... but since you're ruling out diesel, the 460 is prolly the best compromise between power and mpg. The 351 doesn't have enough and the V10 is a huge gas hog... (right JP?)

I know my buddies 460(97 F-250) could pull the buidling down but it got about 8-10mpg but has all the power you will ever need!!

7.3 with Hypertech chip=18 in town and 21 on highway I get around 13 towing my 14500 lb. camper to Myrtle Beach from Kings Mountain, of course it's down hill! It don't do as good coming home!! LOL LOL LOL!!!!!:toothy12:

hey Eric,Ford went to fuel injection in 1987,& if it has overdrive it will be an E4OD,if its a 3 spd it will be a C6..both are good trans....i had a 460 in a 97 F450 wrecker & loved it.:xyxthumbs:..towing in town i got 8-10 miles to the gallon, on the road with OD it was 15mpg....I change the air filter to a K&N,threw the litte air tubes away & made larger fresh air tubes 4 inch i think,change the exhaust to flowmaster &3.5 in pipes.......i put 200,000 miles on it with no problems......replace the tranny once @ 115,000..i miss that truck & wish i had it back......as for a 460:xyxthumbs:go for it......Dean :rebel:
