Home made heavy duty steering
#1
It really is simple. Welding required. 1.5"x.188wall or .250 wall DOM tubing, 18 wheeler inner dual lugnuts, available at NAPA, and a tape measure. This system uses heims and not tie rod ends. Steering knuckles would need to be drilled out for 3/4" bolts. Spacers can be made from 1"x.120 wall DOM tubing. The outer threads of the lugnuts needs to be removed in order to use the .250 wall tubing. Spacers go between the drag link and tie rod at the right wheel. Uses 2 left hand and 2 right hand lugnuts and 2 ea L and R heims. You can make your own adjustable track bar, too but bending that tubing is tough. Screw the heim about half way into the lugnut, they are threaded in and out, 3/4" fine thread. Put the lugnut in the end of the tube and weld a bead all the way around (the lug nut, NOT the heim). Half way gives room for toe adjustment. Also lets you know how long the tube need to be. You get a pretty good idea measuring what you have first and then mocking up the new assembly to see how long each heim/lugnut combo is. That's about it. Put the jamb nut on to lock every thing once the toe is set. Drag link and track bar are made the same way.
74 Bronco Ranger halfcab w/toys: lockers f&r, wristed arm, C4, D20, hyd assist steering, 37"MTRs, warm 302. Capability, that's what I'm talkin' bout.
