well its complicated...first i measured the diameter of the carrier bearing race with a digital caliper (2.886"), then divided by 2 to find axle centerline in the bearing (1.443")
then using the depth stick on my caliper, i measured the depth of the carrier bearing seats (1.460"). this info told me the carrier cap mounting surface was 0.017" taller than the axle centerline (1.460-1.443=0.017)
so using the carrier cap mounting surface as my measuring point i lay a straight edge across them and measured from the straight edge to the pinion face. each measurement on the caliper would then have the thickness of the straight edge (1.010"), and the 0.017" from above subtracted yeilding the pinion distance from axle centerline.
due to the complication of all that, i measured everything 3 times a peice, and wrote down each and every measurement. it sucked but i can do math better than i can buy specialty tools for one time use...upergrin:upergrin:upergrin:
i edited the wording in the first post about the backlash, i realized it looked like the backlash is .001"-.003". the backlash is .007" which is just .001-.003 out of spec, depending on the source of the specification...
