my dads 99 Ford Ranger motor took a dive

Try car-part.com, they will give you salvage yards close to you with one for sale.
It is likely that only that 3.0 will work, mostly due to the injection system and wiring.
You could go with the v8 but its a not a easy swap and can run hot.
For a daily driver I would just drop a used motor in.
