You're missing the point, JP. He's RE-installing the same axles he took out but with new bearings. Something is amiss on this dark and stormy night......
Ford tool? BFH. Nahhhhhh.
I just replaced my rear axle bearings and seals a few weeks ago. I ran into a similar issue but realized that I was trying to put the long axle on the short side. The bearing was sitting about an inch outside. I assume you've already checked that given the thread. Like most of the guys have said, I did have to work with the axles to get them to finally engage and sit correctly. When it finally engages it's very obvious and almost takes your thumbs off in the process.
Thanks everybody for the ideas and input. JP mine look just like the '76-'77 big bearing on the left in your picture. Eric, I'll be calling you to schedule some time when you can come take a look. Thanks again to everyone.

Well i rode the 45 minutes and got his axles installed. this was the culprit. it would not fit over the bearins so with it behind the backing plate the bearing wouldnt go through it and into the housing. Good to meet you Joel!
Thank you, thank you Eric! Badass is way more than just your user name! What a great guy! Eric came over this evening and within about 15 minutes had figured out that this stupid axle housing gasket was what had been frustrating me for months. Does anybody know what the point of having it is? What was it supposed to do anyway?
Eric, thanks again man. I really appreciate you making the trip and spending the time helping me. Let me know if I can ever lend a hand in return. Or at least let me buy you a beer sometime.
Woo Hoo! I can't wait to get my Bronco back out on the road this weekend!
Thanks again to everybody for contributing ideas and suggestions.
