Cam advice....
#21
yeah, but i would think mild upgrades wont push the motor over the edge. i would really like to do something also. like a better cam in the 306 and a better one in the 5.0

Advancing cam time moves the torque range down about 200 rpm for each degree and advancing moves the torque up about 200 rpm for each degree, roughly speaking. When I first bought my '93 LX back in the day, I installed the 1.7 rockers and retarded the cam time 4*. This allowed me to pull 4.10 gears through the 1/8th mile in 3rd gear. But for the labor involved, I believe it is more worth while to swap the cam rather than advancing the stock.

My personal preference is a long flat torque curve. The FRPP alphabet cams are proven and are still good grinds. And remember the XE270HR grind has about .544" of lift. Which may require fly cutting for piston clearance.

I am definitely leaning towards the E303 now.

How much piston machining do you have to do to clear the valves with over .5" of lift. I thought the small blocks were pretty close from there on up.

The E303 is designed to work with a stocker though the real HP gain is not experienced until the heads are replaced.

From my experiences stock heads with stock size valves are well clearance with the stock pistons. Only valve clearance problems would be with E5 & E6 heads on a '85-86 block. Theses had smaller chambers and flattop pistons.

It would also be wise to upgrade the valve springs and timing chain while your in the motor. Also remember these #'s were calculated using 10:1 compression and 4.030 bore.

ok Aaron, what does our 306 come up with on your program?

302 bored .30 over, roller motor,1.6 roller rockers, trick flow alum heads, alum intake-port match to intake. has a 600 holley w/vac sec. but it has drilled out jets, larger squirters.L&L nickle long tube headers. i attached the cam spec sheet
