Need advice on tube flaring problem...
#1
Got a new block and am having an issue with a 3/16" line that keeps wanting to buckle or bubble just below the flare. This causes the fitting to not slide all the way to the flare and I can't get it to mate properly with the female fitting. Can only get a thread or two in before it pops out. What am I doing wrong? Suggestions.

Thx,
Mike

I have never been able to double flare properly even with several different expensive kits.Thats what the short pieces of premade tubing are for @ Napa. They take all the work out of it.You just have to get greative shaping them. What it looks like is that you have too much tubing sticking out to start with and it gets crushed when you do the second part of the double flare.Practice lots and see if you get better.Hell brakeline is cheap.

You have too much tubing sticking out of the block, so its bending before it flares.
How are you determining the amount tubing sticking out of the block?

X2 on too much tube sticking out.
For the first flare the tube should stick out a little bit. I use the die as a height gage.
When you finish the first flare the tube should be flush with the clamp, not sticking out.
The second flare should just push it into the clamp a little more and widen it out.

I can get you a dimension for initial stick out if you need it.
Also ... are you using the correct die for the first flare?

You have to use the black inserts also as they shape the tube for the second part.

Yup ... that's what I meant by a die.
I just measured mine and for 3/16 tube you need .150 sticking out for the first flare
with the little black die / insert. That should push it down flush with the clamp prior to the final forming without the die.

Good luck ... hope all this helps.

Was using the die it came with to measure but I will use my caliper to get .150 and see what happens. Thx.

Worked like a charm guys. Used the .150 and I have beautiful double flares and zero leaks! The directions state to use the die to determine how far to extend the tube and then a hair beyond that. I measure the thickness of the 3/16 die and it was .235. Obviously WAY too much.

Just need to work out a few more kinks and I will have brakes! YIPEE!

Good deal!
There's few things that feel better than no leaks after any type of plumbing job.
Glad ya got it licked!
