Hi Board,
Can someone tell me what the little black box with cables running to it just behind the battery is?
My bronco wouldn't start today and then I noticed smoke coming from that black box.
Is it the voltage regulator?
Thanks, Clint

Ewwwww!
Please tell me you disconnected the battery and have a fire extinguisher in your Bronco.
If I am not mistaken, were the VRs on those not integrated into the alternator?
Is it the relay box? Can you open it up.
FSB guys, chime in and shed some light.

Hi Chuzie, yes I now know it's the relay box. So what do you suppose is wrong with my bronco? Any ideas?
Thanks, Clint

Well, I just replaced the starter solenoid switch and it's still not starting.
Gives me the buzz sound, and no fire.
What should I try next?
Thanks, Clint

Buzz sound from the dash, from the solenoid, from the starter?
So no cranking? Nothing right? Rather a buch of clicking noise kind of like when your battery is low on voltage?
That sound is the starter relay (solenoid) opening and closing. If you have that sound but no crank I would say you have a battery issue or a starter issue and not something in between. What is your battery voltage? How about the connections both at the battery and the starter?
I would also suggest moving the crank by hand a hair in case it is in a bad spot not allowing the starter to move. Or put it in gear and move it.

Get a pic of it up, the voltage regulator is the big coffee can. There are a lot of black boxes in that area so I need some visual stimulation to help.
You can start by checking all your connections and making sure the new starter solenoid is wired correctly.

Quick update everyone,
I replaced the solenoid and had the same problem so I took it up the road to a mechanic and he discovered a bad starter and burnt out solenoid. She's back on the road and running now.
Thanks for everyone's input.
