What is your idle set at?
How long has this been going on?
Any recent changes other than the timing?
What did you set the timing to?
Can you keep it running with a little extra throttle?

I have additional question depending on EFI or carb and auto or manual trans response.

its got an eddlebrock carb. it idles at 800 and stays there it only happens when I try to go somewhere. it got this bad a couple days ago and i havent messed with it since. only thing i have done other than the timing is a new alt. i set the timing so the light matched up and no matter how much throttle i give it it sounds like its starving and dies. its an auto. I would have more info about it but ive only had it for a month and a half

So in park or neutral, you can punch the throttle and it runs fine? This issue only occurs when you place it in gear?

I am inclined to say you have a carb issue(s) perhaps vacuum kick, fast idle cam index, or fast idle RPM adjustment.

It happens when I do it in park/neutral but only sometimes. you think maybe my jets are clogged? Or could it be a filter

I bet the sometimes parts is dependent on engine temp. If you have a clogged jet or filter, it would stall out in Park/Neutral as well when you punch the throttle.

Check out a tech manual for procedures to set the aforementioned parameters.
