"whining" rear axle!
#1
Well, I finally got time to break down my rear axle. For a couple of months, whenever I was driving down the road, i heard a "whining" noise. It got louder the faster I went. Well, when I pulled the axle shafts and dropped the 3rd member, this is what i saw. Check out the pics.

Anybody have any idea on what causes the teeth on the gear to become razor sharp??? Confusedcratchhe:

Tha only thing I can think of is pinion depth. I bought everything complete from Randy's R&P. No towing was involved, no 4 wheeling, and I changed the oil at 500 miles for the break in. Notice the little notches on the side of the ring

Your thoughts......

I'm not an expert on ring gear but I have seen this before on a buddys rig.
It was blamed on improper break in. The ring gear got too hot and lost hardness.
After that it's just a matter of time before the tooth face wears away.
That's what makes them look sharp and I can see chips in the picture.

It sounds like you did it right and again, I'm no expert.
I would send those pic's to Randy's and ask them.
I would be interested to see what happened ... keep us posted.

Pinion depth or improper backlash setting. Who set it up for you. I had one do that and it sounded like a train going down the tracks until it failed and lost some teeth. Setting up the rear is a simple process but the proper measuring equipment is a must.

Randy's did. Came complete to my door.

I asked them what causes this and they replied, Improper break in, towing or offraoding. I told them I did none of that. So he cut me a deal on the price and gave me a lifetime warrenty. So If this happens again, all I do is send back the old R&P and I get new ones.

My new ring and pinion and install kit will be here Tues!! Can't wait!!

Well it sucks that happened in the first place but I'm glad you have it sorted out
and will be rolling again next week.
Sounds like this one is the last you will ever pay for. Sweet deal!

Looks to be built too tight (I.E. preload), but since they stepped up and took care of it I wouldent worry about it. On some cars I have run it at idle on jack stands to break in a rear end to ensure it was broke in before hard use.

I thought Yukon warrantied their product regardless of vendor.
