Replacing rear main seal
#1
hey guys, i'm new to this site but have been looking at some of the great pics on here. Here is my problem, i have a 1986 FSB with the 300 six cyl with the C6 4x4 and it needs a new rear main seal REAL BAD! Some shops have given me a quotes from $450 and up, well i dont have that kind of money for this job so i have been wondering how hard is it any way to do myself. I do have experience working with cars and the tools to do it just wondering if you guys would now of anything special i might encounter along the way? Thanks in advance:biggthumpup:

Not real familiar with the 300 6. Do you know if it has a 1 or 2 piece seal?

If it has a one piece seal the tranny will have to come out. If it has a 2 piece you can get by with just pulling the oil pan and rear main cap.

AutoZone says it's a 1 piece seal when you look it up online.

Just pull the transmission & flywheel and the rear main seal is right there :xyxthumbs:

Yep, its a once piece, it can be a pain in the ass to get in there so just take your time. You may want to make your life easier by buying a tranny adapter for your floor jack....that SOB is heavy.

I agree. Tranny adaptor is a life saver (and a back saver). I promise it is worth the $$ with just the time and frustration it saves.
